The scope of MM Romance has so many subniches that it might be confusing sometimes. Terms and labels like Omegaverse, Alphas, Shifters and MPREG seem from another world alongside more vanilla content like College, Sports and Workplace Romance. All of this is not exclusive to gay stories and the same genres, tropes and themes are equally common in hetero romance.

Short for male pregnancy, MPREG is a popular niche of speculative romance fiction. In a nutshell, it explores the possibility of male pregnancy and relies heavily on the emotional interaction between the male characters while overcoming hurdles to build a family. MPREG stories occur within most subgenres of MM romance, with Omegaverse being the most common.

As a niche, MPREG is surprisingly large. Thousands of titles exist and many rank high on the Amazon bestseller lists. As an author, doing niche research is vital and publishing to a vibrant and release-hungry readership is the way many start their careers.

The readership is often the same as those who already enjoy shifters, magical systems, fantasy and futuristic settings. While incredible, the unusual biological rules that rule the mpreg niche is not something that turns them away. At its core, the stories focus on universal romance themes of love, responsibility, fear of the unknown, and the joy of building a life together, all with a heft dose of angst and cute manners.

From where did the male pregnancy fiction niche & topic come from? Maybe it was inspired by real occurrences in nature.

Seahorse is an example of male pregnancy in nature

My first novels that found some traction were all MPREG. I wrote them for several reasons. First and foremost, the whole idea of male pregnancy was an interesting and challenging subject to tackle as a writer. second, it’s a somewhat easier niche to get started in. Meeting reader expectations in a speculative niche is never easy though, and reviews have been a rollercoaster. Needless to say, my first attempts were not perfect, although a recent basic polish has made them all more readable.

Changing lanes. As of 2026 as I am not writing MPREG or speculative fiction. My novels are still published and I have no plans to take them down. That said, I now focus on contemporary romance with my latest novel NOT INTO GUYS already published in Jan 2026. Have a look:
